logbook brave new world
Day 1:
Today we started a new project today: read to book brave new world make a presentation about it and present it to your class mates. At the end you also need to make I logbook (welcome). On this they our teacher told us the basics of the book and showed us a little video where there were some things told about the book: the counting of the years is not from when Jesus Christ was born but from when the first real big production was (ford around 1920). In the book is it 600 after ford (around 2520 A.D.). There are this big buildings where a lot of the people work. This is where all the kids are made (I will tell about that in day 2). All the people are sorted in 5 different groups: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon. Everyone has her/his own position in the society and everyone is happy with it.
Day 2:
The process of making and conditioning a child in the Brave New World:
It starts with an egg. When this egg is fertilized, they split it into a lot more. This way you get twins. Then they put the fertilized eggs in bottles and there they grow into babies. In each bottle they put nutrients especially made to create a baby who is good for its own group (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon). When they are fully grown babies they get out of their cases once in a while. The nurses show pictures to them. In this pictures are things that babies find pretty like flowers. Some of the babies have to work in a factory or underground when they are adults. The system doesn’t want them to like nature to much so when the baby sees a picture of a pretty flower he gets an electric shock. This makes babies cry and when they ever see that again they hate it. This is called Conditioning. When a child grows up the Conditioning goes on, for example with “sleep-teaching”. Here they use speakers to let a voice say the same thins all night while the children are sleeping. When they wake the children believe what the voice told them.
Day 3:
The people in the book:
Bernard Marx: when this man was made there went something wrong in the HAC (Hatching and Conditioning Centre). He is an Alpha-plus, normally this group has the longest people but he is short. He also has some human feelings, he only wants to be together with Lenina and not with other women. This is very strange in the new world.
Lenina Crowne: This is a pretty girl, all the guys want her. In the beginning of the book she behaves as a good girl in the brave new world. She does exactly what they want from her like dating different men. Maybe she has some feelings that are not normal in the book. When she meets John she falls in love with him.
John: he is called the Savage because he is not made in the HAC but in a natural way (in our world). He lives far away from London in a Reservation. When he meets Bernard and Lenina they take him and his mother to London. He had a fun time there till he noticed that Bernard and Lenina used him to get popular and all the people find him a strange guy. He moves to a house away from London, there he wants to find peace. But when the people find out that he lives there the go to him. They saw him hitting himself with a whip, he did this because he thought he didn’t deserve a house and to be happy.
Linda: She is John’s mother. She was raised in the new world but she got pregnant in the Reservation and stayed there. She has got opposite feelings for John: sometimes she loves him and hugs him the whole time but sometimes she hits him and screams at him.
Day 4:
Today we found out we need to do a presentation about the book. We all need to do our presentation about one subject of the book. My presentation is about conditioning. The conditioning in this book is really important because without it all the people would be different. If they did not get shocks as a baby when they saw flowers they would love to see flowers and that is the same with other things like books and work. Without conditioning this book would not get the point it has right now (everyone is a part of one big machine) because everyone would do their own thing and not what others want them to do. I think it would be boring to life in a society like that because you can’t do your own thing. But I think if you life there and you’re brain washed you won’t even notice it.
Day 5:
Today I did a lot of grammas together with Britney ( http://www.britneyenglish.wordpress.com ). We both made the tasks apart and the we compared it with each other. When we were ready, we checked it with the answers. We were happy that most of the answers were correct.
At home I read the book together with my mom because when I read it myself I forget most of the text. When I hear the text I remember it better. We read a chapter every day. When we finished one chapter we first talk about the context of the story. I like this method very much because I have dyslexia and this is how I understand everything best. I found some words in the book very difficult to understand but I really liked the story.
Day 6:
I will tell you something about the author: Aldous Huxley was born on the 26th of July 1894 in Godalming. When he was young he really liked drawing. He started writing at the age of 17. His first published book was Crome Yellow (1921). He has written a lot in his live: 11 novels, 7 short stories, 9 poetries, 24 essays, and further screen plays, children’s fiction stories, travel books, drama and articles for Vedanta and the west. During World War 1 he lived close to oxford and worked on a farm as laborer. Later he moved to Hollywood (1937) with his wife, son and friend. Most of the time he lived in southern California till he died what was on the 22nd of November 1963. In 1999 the modern library ranked brave new world 5th on its list of the 100 best English-Language novels of the 20th century. He wrote brave new world in France in 4 months from May till August 1931. He was inspired by novels of H.G. Wells.
Day 7:
Today it was my turn to do my presentation. I was telling about “Conditioning” (all information about conditioning you can read in Day 2). I started talking with my mom about what I already knew about this theme. While we were talking I made notes. Later I used this notes to make a text with all the things I wanted to say in the presentation. The next step was making a Prezi to add to the text. When my Prezi was done I tried it with the text and timed it (3 minutes). I tried my presentation at home for my parents (2 minutes 15). I wanted it to be perfect so I tried it several times in front of my mother and father. The next morning I did it once again. When it was time to do the presentation at school I was very nervous. I think this is why it didn’t go as well as I hoped. I was very disappointed but I am still happy with my grade.
Day 8:
In the society of the book it isn’t normal to be friends with whoever you want because you’re told you can only for example if you’re epsilon you can only be friends with other epsilons. It’s a really weird idea that they kind of want you to bully other groups when know everyone is totally against bulling. But when I talked about this with my mom she said that this isn’t really bulling but more looking down at others (or looking up if you’re a lower group). The ranking of the groups is Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon what makes the Alphas also the tallest after them the Betas then the Gammas then the Deltas and as smallest the Epsilons. You can also see from which groups the person is because of the color shirt he/she is wearing Alphas wear gray, Betas wear Mulberry, Deltas wear Khaki, Gammas wear green and Epsilons wear black.
Day 9:
Read al the information about the character is day 3. I think that if I would live in that world I would have had most contact with Lenina because I think she is the nicest. I would be scared of John because he hits himself with a whip and I would not know what to do with that.
Day 10:
Today is the last day of the project. I liked the book because it shows what the world can became like. I think it is really cool how Aldous Huxley can explain this clear way what he means and where he is trying to warn us for. Even though this book is written in 1931it is still really modern and the problem we have. He showed really good how important it is to be yourself and to have family (because in the book you don’t have any family members) and friends around you. The most interesting part from this book is that he wrote it a long time ago when kids could not be made in laboratories but now they already can make kids there so it became more like reality. What I made think about the most is how normal it is to have sex with everyone and that you don’t have a relation with someone else. I would recommend this book because it is really meaningful story but also fun to read.
