logbook brave new world

Day 1:

Today we started a new project today: read to book brave new world make a presentation about it and present it to your class mates. At the end you also need to make I logbook (welcome). On this they our teacher told us the basics of the book and showed us a little video where there were some things told about the book: the counting of the years is not from when Jesus Christ was born but from when the first real big production was (ford around 1920). In the book is it 600 after ford (around 2520 A.D.). There are this big buildings where a lot of the people work. This is where all the kids are made (I will tell about that in day 2). All the people are sorted in 5 different groups: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon. Everyone has her/his own position in the society and everyone is happy with it.

Day 2:

The process of making and conditioning a child in the Brave New World:

It starts with an egg. When this egg is fertilized, they split it into a lot more. This way you get twins. Then they put the fertilized eggs in bottles and there they grow into babies. In each bottle they put nutrients especially made to create a baby who is good for its own group (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon). When they are fully grown babies they get out of their cases once in a while. The nurses show pictures to them. In this pictures are things that babies find pretty like flowers. Some of the babies have to work in a factory or underground when they are adults. The system doesn’t want them to like nature to much so when the baby sees a picture of a pretty flower he gets an electric shock. This makes babies cry and when they ever see that again they hate it. This is called Conditioning. When a child grows up the Conditioning goes on, for example with “sleep-teaching”. Here they use speakers to let a voice say the same  thins all night while the children are sleeping. When they wake the children believe what the voice told them.

Day 3:

The people in the book:

Bernard Marx: when this man was made there went something wrong in the HAC (Hatching and Conditioning Centre). He is an Alpha-plus, normally this group has the longest people but he is short. He also has some human feelings, he only wants to be together with Lenina and not with other women. This is very strange in the new world.

Lenina Crowne: This is a pretty girl, all the guys want her. In the beginning of the book she behaves as a good girl in the brave new world. She does exactly what they want from her like dating different men. Maybe she has some feelings that are not normal in the book. When she meets John she falls in love with him.

John: he is called the Savage because he is not made in the HAC but in a natural way (in our world). He lives far away from London in a Reservation. When he meets Bernard and Lenina they take him and his mother to London. He had a fun time there till he noticed that Bernard and Lenina used him to get popular and all the people find him a strange guy. He moves to a house away from London, there he wants to find peace. But when the people find out that he lives there the go to him. They saw him hitting himself with a whip, he did this because he thought he didn’t deserve a house and to be happy.

Linda: She is John’s mother. She was raised in the new world but she got pregnant in the Reservation and stayed there. She has got opposite feelings for John: sometimes she loves him and hugs him the whole time but sometimes she hits him and screams at him.

Day 4:

Today we found out we need to do a presentation about the book. We all need to do our presentation about one subject of the book. My presentation is about conditioning. The conditioning in this book is really important because without it all the people would be different. If they did not get shocks as a baby when they saw flowers they would love to see flowers and that is the same with other things like books and work. Without conditioning this book would not get the point it has right now (everyone is a part of one big machine) because everyone would do their own thing and not what others want them to do. I think it would be boring to life in a society like that because you can’t do your own thing. But I think if you life there and you’re brain washed you won’t even notice it.

Day 5:

Today I did a lot of grammas together with Britney                                                                       ( http://www.britneyenglish.wordpress.com ). We both made the tasks apart and the we compared it with each other. When we were ready, we checked it with the answers. We were happy that most of the answers were correct.

At home I read the book together with my mom because when I read it myself I forget most of the text. When I hear the text I remember it better. We read a chapter every day. When we finished one chapter we first talk about the context of the story. I like this method very much because I have dyslexia and this is how I understand everything best. I found some words in the book very difficult to understand but I really liked the story.

Day 6:

I will tell you something about the author: Aldous Huxley was born on the 26th of July 1894 in Godalming. When he was young he really liked drawing. He started writing at the age of 17. His first published book was Crome Yellow (1921). He has written a lot in his live: 11 novels, 7 short stories, 9 poetries, 24 essays, and further screen plays, children’s fiction stories, travel books, drama and articles for Vedanta and the west. During World War 1 he lived close to oxford and worked on a farm as laborer. Later he moved to Hollywood (1937) with his wife, son and friend. Most of the time he lived in southern California till he died what was on the 22nd of November 1963. In 1999 the modern library ranked brave new world 5th on its list of the 100 best English-Language novels of the 20th century. He wrote brave new world in France in 4 months from May till August 1931. He was inspired by novels of H.G. Wells.

Day 7:

Today it was my turn to do my presentation. I was telling about “Conditioning” (all information about conditioning you can read in Day 2). I started talking with my mom about what I already knew  about this theme. While we were talking I made notes. Later I used this notes to make a text with all the things I wanted to say in the presentation. The next step was making a Prezi to add to the text. When my Prezi was done I tried it with the text and timed it (3 minutes). I tried my presentation at home for my parents (2 minutes 15). I wanted it to be perfect so I tried it several times in front of my mother and father. The next morning I did it once again. When it was time to do the presentation at school I was very nervous. I think this is why it didn’t go as well as I hoped. I was very disappointed but I am still happy with my grade.

Day 8:
In the society of the book it isn’t normal to be friends with whoever you want because you’re told you can only for example if you’re epsilon you can only be friends with other epsilons. It’s a really weird idea that they kind of want you to bully other groups when know everyone is totally against bulling. But when I talked about this with my mom she said that this isn’t really bulling but more looking down at others (or looking up if you’re a lower group). The ranking of the groups is Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and Epsilon what makes the Alphas also the tallest after them the Betas then the Gammas then the Deltas and as smallest the Epsilons. You can also see from which groups the person is because of the color shirt he/she is wearing Alphas wear gray, Betas wear Mulberry, Deltas wear Khaki, Gammas wear green and Epsilons wear black.

Day 9:

Read al the information about the character is day 3. I think that if I would live in that world I would have had most contact with Lenina because I think she is the nicest. I would be scared of John because he hits himself with a whip and I would not know what to do with that.

Day 10:

Today is the last day of the project. I liked the book because it shows what the world can became like. I think it is really cool how Aldous Huxley can explain this clear way what he means and where he is trying to warn us for. Even though this book is written in 1931it is still really modern and the problem we have. He showed really good how important it is to be yourself and to have family (because in the book you don’t have any family members) and friends around you. The most interesting part from this book is that he wrote it a long time ago when kids could not be made in laboratories but now they already can make kids there so it became more like reality. What I made think about the most is how normal it is to have sex with everyone and that you don’t have a relation with someone else. I would recommend this book because it is really meaningful story but also fun to read.

music was my first love

The Beatles, let it be

The band:

The Beatles was a band from LivAfbeeldingsresultaat voor let it be beatleserpool, England. The band existed from 1960 to 1970, the band members were Paul McCartney (still active in music), John Lennon (killed in 1980, 40 years of age), Ringo Starr and George Harrison (died in 2001 due to  cancer)

The song:

It’s about a woman who was sick, she went to the hospital. She died there the night  after she came in the hospital. Her son thought she left him because he may have said wrong things. It is probably  based on the time that Paul McCartney’s mom died when he was only 12 years old.

I think the melody is a bit boring the text is really sad if you think this really happened to Paul McCartney.

i think it needs to be in the “Top 100” because without a song of The Beatles the “Top 100” is not complete.

Facts:

  1. 20 August 1969 was the last time that all four Beatles recorded together, they finished ‘I Want You (She’s So Heavy’).

The Rolling Stones, Paint It BlackAfbeeldingsresultaat voor rolling stones paint it black

The band was formed in London in 1962 and is still making music today. The four band members are:

  • Mick Jagger, singer
  • Keith Richards, guitarist
  • Charlie watts, drummer
  • Ron wood, guitarist

The song  is written from the viewpoint of a person who is depressed. He wants everything to turn black to match his mood. There was no specific inspiration for the lyrics. When Mick Jagger was asked at the time why he wrote a song about death, Mick Jagger replied: “I don’t know. It’s been done before. It’s not an original thought by any means. It all depends on how you do it.”

I like the melody of this song because it is a very special sound. When you hear it once you can always rembember it.

It belongs in the “Top 100” because it reminds people of the war in Vietnam and that was an important event.

Facts:

  • This song was used in a film about the Vietnam War called Full Metal Jacket.
  • Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are in the band since the beginning
  • There was always a sort of battle between the fans of the Beatles and the fans of the Rolling Stones. In those days you could only like one of the two bands.

Boomtown Rats, I don’t like MondaysAfbeeldingsresultaat voor Boomtown Rats, I don’t like Mondays

The band:

The band is formed in 1975 and they stopped in 1986. The singer of the Boomtown Rats was Bob Geldof (he also wrote this song). He was very interested in the problems of the world, especially the famine in Ethiopia. To collect money for the pour people he wrote the famous song “do they know it’s Christmas”. The song was performed by a lot of very famous  artists, under the band name ”Band-Aid”.

The song:

This song is based on a real story that happened 37 years ago. There was this girl Brenda Spencer, a 16-year-old high school student. On Monday 29 January, 1979 she went to school with a gun and  she shot 2 adults. When people asked her why she did this she answered “I just don’t like Mondays”. Because she did this she made people at her school afraid to go to school on Mondays so she didn’t have to go herself. She did not have to go to school anymore, she is still in prison today.

I like the song because the melody is really happy but if you think about the text it doesn’t really fit each other.

It belongs in the “Top 100” because the subject is still up to date

Facts:

  • This song was a number one hit in 23 countries.

David Bowie, a Space OddityAfbeeldingsresultaat voor David Bowie, a Space Oddity

David Bowie was born in 1947. His real name was David Jones. He changed his name in 1966 because there was another artist with the same name (Davy Jones, singer of the Monkees).

David Bowie was always very interested in space. One of his characters in Ziggy Stardust, a rock singer from another planet.

This song is  about Major Tom, who is an astronaut. He is going into space at the beginning of the song. There is connection between “Ground Control” and Major Tom but later in the video they lose this connection. People think it’s about being high on drugs. Major Tom returned in two of David Bowies later songs:

–   Ashes to Ashes in 1980.

–   Blackstar in 2016.  This song was released two days before he died (10 January 2016, Manhattan, New York, United States). In the video you can see the costume of Major Tom with a skeleton full of jewels on it.

I like the song,  it’s a song that I would listen to in my own time. David Bowie died this year and then I discovered how important he was for music. This song was his first hit and deserves to be in the “Top 100” because Bowie made a lot of new styles in music.

Facts:Afbeeldingsresultaat voor david bowie on stage

  • He had a lot of characters like: Thin White Duke, Aladdin Sane and Jareth the Goblin King.
  • He always had really weird clothes on, not only in video clips but also on stage.
  • When he was young he fought with a friend over a girl. In that fight his left eye was damaged, that is why it looks like he had two different coloured eyes but they  actually were both blue.

Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody

Queen is a British rock band. The band was formed in 1970 in London by guitarist Brian Afbeeldingsresultaat voor Queen – Bohemian RhapsodyMay, singer Freddy Mercury (born as Farrokh Bulsara) and drummer Roger Taylor. In 1971 bass player John Deacon became the fourth member.

Bohemian Rhapsody is a worldwide number one hit in 1975/1976. When Freddy Mercury died,   it became a success again.

This song was totally new and unique when it was released. It had many different sorts of melodies and was not traditional with couplets and a refrain. It contains an acapella part, a bit of ballad, a guitar solo, some opera and an end with loud hard-rock music.

Bohemian Rhapsody is  totality different than other songs that were ever written before. The record label was not happy with it. People were afraid that it was not going to be played a lot on the radio because it is a song  more than 6 minutes long.

The band could not play the opera part live. After Brian Mays guitar solo all lights went off Afbeeldingsresultaat voor Queenand the band members left the stage. The opera part was played from a tape. After the high note at the end of the opera part the band returned  on stage for the Hard Rock part, with fireworks and lightshows.

Mercury only wanted to tell people that the song is about relations. The other band members respected  his wish so noboby knows the real meaning till now. Brian May thinks that the theory that says that the text is about personal traumas of Freddy Mercury is right.

I really like this song I like the part where there is a lot after each other really much because it’s getting fast and it’s funny. The song makes me always laugh because it let me think of the Muppets.

ABBA – Super Trouper

ABBA was a Swedish pop band, that was made out of four band members:

The name ABBA is made of the first letters of the names from the band members. The band was formed with 2 couples (Agnetha/Benny en Björn/Anni-Frid). Their success started in 1974 when they won the Eurovision song festival with the song Waterloo.

The song:

It is about a lonely star who lives a boring live of eating, sleeping and singing, hoping every show will be the last one. she missses het friend  but tonight he will be in the audience between 20.000 people. This fact will make the whole show different. Finally the big spotlight (the Super Trouper) will make her shine. The song shows how you can still feel lonely although  you have got  thousands of fans.  That there is sometimes only one person needed to  make you feel alive.

It’s a happy melody and the text sounds nice on it. The band ABBA made a lot of songs and should be in the “Top 100”.

Red hot chili peppers, Californication

It’s an American band from LA, California formed in 1983 and still making music with four band members:

The song:

The song is made in 1999, it was written by Kiedis The song is made out of a lot of different quotes from other artists and films like Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain and David Bowie (“Cobain: can you hear the spheres singing songs off Station to Station?”), The Beach Boys (“They’re just another Good Vibration”), Star Wars (“and Alderaan’s not far away”) and Moon landing conspiracy theories (“Space may be the final frontier but it’s made in a Hollywood basement”). The phrase “First born Unicorn” refers to Dorothy Stratten, whose life was covered in the book The Killing of the Unicorn.

I like the melody, I think it’s really modern so is the video clip. The text is only a little bit weird sometimes. It is a catchy song and I like it very much.

it is really modern for that time so that is why it belongs in “Top 100”.

Facts:

  • The song was used in the film: The Smartest Guys in the Room
  • Their breakthrough was with the song Mother’s Milk.
  • The video clip is like a videogame where the artists are playing their instruments and singing.

Herman brood, Saturday night

Herman Brood:schilderij

Herman Brood was a Dutch painter, singer, pianist, actor and author. He was born on 5 November 1946 and died on 11 July 2001 (aged 54), he jumped of the Hilton Hotel. He made lots of famous artworks (me and my brother both made one of his paintings as you can see).

The song:

The song is released  in 1978 and was number 23 in the Dutch top 40. Saturday Night was his biggest hit. It was the second single he released from his album Shpritsz (1978). His band was called “the Wild Romance”.

I don’t like this song because you can’t really hear what he is saying and the melody isn’t really original. Maybe the only reason this song should be in the “Top 100” is that he biggest Dutch rockstars.

Facts:Afbeeldingsresultaat voor herman brood

  • While he made his colourful paintings he was actually colour-blind.
  • His nickname was “rock ‘n’ roll junkie” because he used a lot of drugs and was famous for his music.

John Lennon, imagine

John Lennon:

John Lennon was born on 9 October 1940 and died on 8 December 1980 (aged 40) because Afbeeldingsresultaat voor John Lennon, imaginehe was shot by Mark David Chapman. John Lennon was from 1960 till 1970 a band member of the Beatles.

Jon Lennon was married to Yoko Ono. She was an artist from Japan. Many people think that she was the reason that  the Beatles broke up.

The song:

The song is made in May 1971 .It’s about imagining a world full of peace without racist and religion and nationality parted. John Lennon thought if he made the melody slow it was going to get a bigger audience.

I think the melody of this song is a bit to slow. The meaning of the text is really beautiful and I really hope someday the world will look like that. Because of the text and the comfort it brings to many people it belongs into the “Top 100”.

Facts:

  • He hated his own voice, he would often ask the Beatles producer to cover the sound of his voice.
  • The last picture of John Lennon taken, was him signing an album for the man who killed him a few hours later.
  • John and Yoko made a protest against all war. They had a “Bed-In” in the Hilton Hotel Amsterdam.

U2, the sweetest thing

The band:

U2 is an Irish rock band, the band was formed in 1976 and is still making music. The bandAfbeeldingsresultaat voor U2, the sweetest thing members are still the same as the beginning:

  • Bono, singer and guitarist
  • The Edge; guitar, keyboard and singer
  • Adam Clayton, bassist
  • Larry Mullen Jr., drummer

The song:

This song is specially made for Bono’s  wife, because he forgot her birthday. Of course she didn’t like this, so in the clip there are all the things she loves (for example: Riverdance, an orchestra, an elephant with the word “sorry” painted on his head). At the start of the clip you can see Bono’s wife (Ali Hewson) herself.   This video is made to show Ali that he really loves her a lot.

I really like the sound of Bono’s voice the melody is really relaxing. The video clip is really cool if you ask me. I think it is one of the best love songs ever written and therefore a  real “Top 100″song.
